סיפור החיים של צ׳רלי מגירה

גבי אבודרהם נולד ב-1972 למשפחה מזרחית בבית שאן, עיר עתיקה שנמצאת בצפון ישראל. בגיל 19 הוא הכיר את בועז גולדברג. הם נפגשו בבית הספר והתחילו לנגן יחד. הם נשארו הרבה שעות בבית וכתבו שירי רוקנ’רול כמו ב-1950 – שירים על בחורות, על קיץ שלא נגמר, על ים ועל אהבה עצובה. אחרי כמה חודשים, גבי התחיל בשינוי גדול יותר: לא רק שהשירים שלו היו בעבר, אלא גם שהוא נכנס לדמות של מישהו משנות החמישים. הוא קרא לעצמו מאותו רגע צ’ארלי מגירה. בראיון לעיתון הוא אמר: “אני רוצה לחזור לעבר שאף פעם לא היה.”
בתל אביב של שנות ה-80 וה-90 הייתה סצינה אלטרנטיבית של אנשים שהתלבשו, רקדו ודיברו כאילו הם נמצאים במועדון בלונדון של שנות ה-50, ולא בישראל. לכן הקהל האלטרנטיבי בתל אביב מאוד אהב אותו. אבל גבי (או צ’ארלי) לא רצה להישאר בישראל, ואחרי שהתחתן הוא עבר לברלין, שם נולד לו בן.
החיים כמוזיקאי היו לו קשים. לפעמים הוא אמר: “אני לא יודע אם אני רוצה להמשיך במוזיקה. אולי אני צריך לעבור למקצוע אחר”. אבל גבי לא הפסיק אף פעם לנגן ולשיר. הוא והלהקה שלו הופיעו בכל אירופה וגם בארצות הברית. הרבה אנשים התחילו לשים לב לדמות המוזרה שהופיעה פתאום, כאילו משום מקום. ההופעות שלו הפכו לרדיקליות יותר, ונראה שהפרסונה של צ’ארלי מגירה נכנסה לתוכו, ולא הפוך. גבי אבודרהם הפסיק להיות גבי; הוא הפך לצ’ארלי.
היו לו הזדמנויות לעשות כסף מהמוזיקה שלו, והרבה אנשים רצו לראות אותו מצליח. יש לו קול מיוחד מאוד ולכל השירים שלו יש סאונד וינטג’ מעניין. במאים מפורסמים אפילו השתמשו במוזיקה שלו בסרטים שלהם, וכולם חשבו שעוד רגע זה קורה – וצ’ארלי מצליח בכל העולם. אבל זה היה מאוחר מדי. ב-2016 הוא נמצא מת בבית שלו. כשמצאו אותו, הגיטרה שלו הייתה עדיין מחוברת.  צ’ארלי מגירה נשאר דמות מיוחדת במוזיקה הישראלית האלטרנטיבית. הוא נתן למוזיקאים מוטיבציה להיות מי שהם באמת רוצים, בלי קשר לארץ שלהם, לאיפה הבית שלהם נמצא ולאיך אנשים בשכונה שלהם התלבשו.

אילו צלילים כוכבים משמיעים?

אולי שמעתם על החללית וויג׳ר – החללית שNASA שלחה לחלל לפני יותר מ-30 שנה, ומאז היא שטה בגלקסיה. החללית וויג׳ר הקליטה גלים אלקטרומגנטיים שנפלטים מכוכבים. בחלל כמובן אי אפשר לשמוע כלום – מפני שבשביל לשמוע צריך אוויר. אבל מדענים יכולים לקחת את ההקלטות האלה ו״לתרגם״ אותן לצלילים שאנחנו יכולים לשמוע. אז איך זה נשמע?
מצד אחד זה בטח לא נשמע כמו מוזיקה. בשביל מוזיקה צריך סדר, היגיון, קצב או הרמוניה. הצלילים שהכוכבים משמיעים הם כאוטיים מאוד, ולכן הם נשמעים יותר כמו אפקט דיסטורשן. אבל מצד שני הצלילים האלה הם כן ייחודיים – כלומר, לכל כוכב יש את הצליל שלו, כמו ״טביעת אצבע״ של גלים אלקטרומגנטיים. יש כוכבים שנשמעים כמו הרבה מאוד ״קליקים״ וצפצופים, יש כוכבים שנשמעים כמו הצלילים שעושה הרוח, ויש כוכבים שנשמעים כמו המהום. אבל יש כוכב אחד שמשמיע צליל מעצבן ומפחיד במיוחד – כוכב שבתאי.
כוכב שבתאי, סטורן באנגלית, משמיע צליל שמזכיר להרבה אנשים סרטי אימה. רוב האנשים ששומעים את הצליל הזה מתארים אותו כ״צעקה של הכוכב״ או כמו ״הצליל שבטח יש בגיהנום״. אבל מה בעצם קשה בצליל הזה? למה הוא מפחיד אותנו? כנראה שהסיבה לכך היא דווקא אנחנו – ולא הוא. האוזן של בני האדם בנוייה כך שיש צלילים שמעצבנים אותה יותר – בעיקר צלילים שדומים לצעקות ולצרחות. אלה צלילים שמפעילים אצלנו את אינסטינקט ה״הילחם או ברח״. הצליל שמשמיע כוכב שבתאי הוא צליל כזה – אבל בגלל שהוא גם לא נשמע כמו קול של אדם הוא אפילו עוד יותר מעצבן – כי הוא גם מוזר לנו מאוד.

הסיפור המוזר של הבננה

הבננה היא פרי מוזר. לדוגמא: אנחנו חושבים שהבננה גדלה על עץ, אבל לפי הבוטניקאים הבננה היא עשב – פשוט עשב גדול מאוד. פירות הבננה גדלים בקבוצות צפופות שהחקלאים קוראים להן כפות (כמו כפות ידיים), וכל בננה היא אצבע.
 
אנשים היו אוכלים בננות בארצות חמות כבר בתקופה הפרה היסטורית, אבל בבננות של פעם היו זרעים גדולים ורבים, ולכן אי אפשר היה לאכול אותן כמעט. בגלל שינויים גנטיים שעשו חקלאים, בבננות של היום אין זרעים בכלל. מצד אחד זה דבר טוב, כי קל ונוח לאכול אותן, אבל מצד שני אם אין זרעים – אי אפשר לזרוע את הבננות, או לשים את הבננות באדמה כדי שיגדל עץ בננות חדש. אז מה עושים החקלאים? הם פשוט לוקחים חלק מעץ בננות ושמים אותו באדמה. 
 
הבעיה בשיטה זו היא שהרבה מאוד מעצי הבננות בעולם זהים גנטית. הבננות לא יכולות לעבור אבולוציה ולהתפתח. זה אומר שאם למשל מחלה חדשה מתחילה לפגוע בבננות, כל הבננות בעולם עלולות להיפגע ולמות. זה קרה כבר בשנות ה-40 של המאה ה-20. כמעט כל עצי הבננה במרכז אמריקה מתו מאותה מחלה. זאת הסיבה שמדענים מנסים היום ליצור סוגים חדשים של בננות. הם משתמשים בבננות בר ובהנדסה גנטית כדי לשנות את הבננות שלנו ו״להמציא״ בננות חדשות.

כמה אנשים גרים בתל-אביב?

הרבה אנשים חושבים שתל אביב היא העיר הכי גדולה בישראל, אבל זה לא נכון: ירושלים היא העיר הכי גדולה בישראל, עם 850,000 אנשים, ותל אביב במקום השני. אז כמה אנשים גרים בתל אביב? ולמה אנשים חושבים שתל אביב היא העיר הכי גדולה?

בתל אביב גרים רק 440,000 איש! אבל ליד תל אביב יש עוד כמה ערים: חולון, בת-ים, רמת גן וגבעתיים. כמעט אין גבול בין תל אביב ובין הערים האלה. ביחד קוראים לערים האלה ולתל אביב ״גוש דן״. בגוש דן גרים 1,300,000 איש. אבל זה לא הכול. תל אביב היא ממש מטרופולין – מסביב לגוש דן יש עוד הרבה ערים שהן חלק ממטרופולין תל אביב. פתח תקווה, רחובות ואפילו נתניה הן חלק מהמטרופולין הזה – אבל תלוי את מי שואלים. הרבה מהאנשים שגרים במטרופולין עובדים או לומדים בתל אביב, או באים לתל אביב הרבה. במטרופולין תל אביב גרים 4,000,000 אנשים.

אנשים חושבים שתל אביב גדולה יותר כי במטרופולין תל אביב גרים הרבה מאוד אנשים (כמעט חצי מהאנשים בישראל!), אבל לא רק. תל אביב היא גם מרכז הכלכלה, התרבות, התקשורת והאמנות של ישראל. המשרדים של הבנקים נמצאים בתל אביב, וגם הבורסה, שגרירויות, מערכות העיתונים, התיאטרון הלאומי, התזמורת הפילהרמונית ועוד. הרבה מאוד אנשים עובדים בתל אביב אבל לא גרים בה, וכל שנה באים לתל אביב 1.7 מיליון תיירים. בגלל זה אנשים חושבים שתל אביב היא עיר מאוד גדולה – אבל היא לא – גרים בתל אביב פחות מחצי מיליון אנשים, והגודל של תל אביב הוא רק 52 קמ״ר – הרבה הרבה פחות מניו-יורק (780 קמ״ר), ברלין (891 קמ״ר) או לונדון (1,520 קמ״ר).

איך היוונים העתיקים היו מתאמנים?

היוונים העתיקים ידעו ואהבו להתאמן. לפי ציורים שארכיאולוגים מצאו על כדים ולפי התיאורים של ההיסטוריונים, היו ליוונים העתיקים מספר סוגי ספורט שהם אהבו מאוד, למשל: איגרוף, ריצה, זריקת דיסק, קפיצה למרחק ועוד. אבל הספורט הפופולרי ביותר ביוון היה היאבקות. המילה היאבקות באה בעברית מהמילה אבק (dust), ובאמת המתאבקים היוונים היו מתאבקים על רצפה מכוסה בחול: בזמן הקרבות היה החול עף כמו אבק.
 
הם היו משתמשים בכלים ובטכניקות שאנחנו מכירים גם היום: היו להם למשל שקי אגרוף (שקים מלאים בחול או דגנים במשקל של בן אדם), כפפות אגרוף ואפילו קסדות. בנוסף ידוע שמתאבקים יוונים היו מרימים משקולות או אבנים כבדות כדי לחזק את גופם. היוונים גם הבינו מאוד באנטומיה. אם מסתכלים על הכפפות שהיו למתאבקים היוונים רואים שהן לא שונות מהכפפות שיש לספורטאי MMA מודרניים, כפפות שמונעות מהיד להישבר. גם היוונים, כמו הרבה אנשים היום, אהבו לשמוע מוזיקה בזמן האימון ובזמן התחרויות.
 
הרבה מענפי הספורט שהיו ליוונים היו קשורים למלחמה: היאבקות, זריקת דיסק, ריצה וקפיצה הן יכולות שכל לוחם טוב צריך. בנוסף היוונים גם אהבו לשחות ולשחק בכדור – אבל לפי מה שאנחנו יודעים לא היו תחרויות שחייה או משחקי כדור תחרותיים. היוונים, אשר חיו בין איים רבים, חשבו כנראה ששחייה היא פעולה בסיסית כמו הליכה, ולכן לא צריך תחרות בשבילה. היוונים גם האמינו שבתחרות יש מנצח אחד – ורק אחד – ולכן לא היה טעם בתחרויות כדור.

צירוף מקרים הוא מצב שבו בין שני מאורעות חסרי קשר נוצרת זיקה הנחשבת למעניינת. צירוף המקרים הופך למעניין יותר כאשר הזיקה נוצרת בין שתי סדרות של מאורעות. המשך הטקסט בקרב אנשים דתיים קרוי לעיתים צירוף מאורעות טוב בשם נס, ויש הרואים בצירוף מקרים השפעה של כוח על-טבעי.
תורת ההסתברות והסטטיסטיקה מאפשרות לבחון עד כמה מקרי צירוף מקרים נתון, כלומר מה ההסתברות שצירוף מקרים זה אכן יקרה. אני טול טיפ בניתוח של צירוף מקרים נדרש גם הבנה של משמעותו. ההסתברות שאדם מסוים יזכה בפרס הראשון בהגרלת פיס מסוימת (המוכרת מיליון כרטיסים) היא 1 למיליון, כלומר הסתברות נמוכה ביותר. ההסתברות לזכייה בשבוע כלשהו בידי מי שמנוי על ההגרלה במשך 20 שנה, ולכן משתתף באלף הגרלות, היא 1 לאלף, כך שזהו צירוף מקרים פחות נדיר. ההסתברות שאדם כלשהו יזכה בהגרלה מסוימת (בהנחה שכל הכרטיסים נמכרו) היא 1 (ודאות), כך שבעצם הזכייה אין כל צירוף מקרים. ללא ניתוח הסתברותי נאות, מאורעות עלולים להיראות אינטואיטיבית כצירופי מקרים מופלאים, אך לאחר ניתוח כזה מתברר שמדובר בתוצאה שכלל איננה מפתיעה. דוגמה נפוצה לכך היא פרדוקס יום ההולדת, המגלה כי במסיבה שבה משתתפים 23 אנשים לפחות, ההסתברות שלשניים מהם יש יום הולדת באותו יום גבוהה מחצי, כלומר זהו צירוף מקרים בנאלי, אף שברגע שקיומו מתברר, הוא מעורר התפעלות. בפולקלור מקובלת הגישה לפיה תגליות מדעיות רבות התגלו באקראי, כתוצאה מצירוף מקרים מופלא, וללא כל כוונה לכך. עיון מעמיק מגלה שתפיסה כזו שגויה. בדרך כלל תגליות מתרחשות לאחר מידה כזו או אחרת של מחקר מקדים, אם כי לעיתים אכן המזל שיחק תפקיד מסוים, מצומצם ביותר, בהשגתן (ראו הרחבה בערך תגלית). ​

Ron Ben Tovim is a post-doctoral researcher focusing on online contemporary American and British post-war poetry in the aftermath of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Ron himself was a soldier in Israel’s Defense Forces during the Lebanon War.
In both his academic and artistic work, he has been dealing with questions of identity, war, grief and the use of words as a means of overcoming trauma.

]]> Yesterday night, less than 50 days before the 2019 elections, we hosted Omer Benjakob at the Ulpan to learn about Israeli political system and those fighting to oust Netanyahu from power. Omer Benjakob is a journalist, a senior news editor at Haaretz in English, and a good friend of the Ulpan. In his 90 minute talk, Omer explains the current political situation in Israel, the difference between right, center and left, what are the real political blocs, and the different possible outcomes for the elections – as well as answering questions from the audience. ]]> On Wednesday, July 18th, Israel has passed a law denying gay couples of the right to surrogacy. At the same time Israel is using it’s LGBT community to show the liberal side of our country around the world. But what rights do gay people actually have in Israel? Is Israel’s use of the community misleading? And where are we heading now that laws are being passed against the LGBT community?

On Sunday, July 22nd, the LGBT community in Israel went for a national strike for the first time ever.Two days later we hosted Imri Kalmann, a social activist and former co-chairperson of the Israeli LGBT Association for a talk exactly about that!

Imri Kalmann was chosen by The Marker Magazine as one of 40 most promising young people of 2015, for his political and nightlife activities, and in 2016, he was chosen by the website Mako as one of the most influential people in the gay community in Israel. He is an entrepreneur and a Tel Aviv nightlife personality who has opened several successful clubs in the city, and was elected co-chairperson of the LGBT Association in 2015.

]]> One day one of our students came to me and showed me an amazing Whatsapp based picture dictionary – it seemed like a life project, and it had many pictures of every object I could think of – with it’s word in Hebrew written on top. It seemed to be a very effective way for her to learn, and the truth is he knew the words for 90% of the words there.

The story behind this project is by her sending a picture of a cat to her partner asking – ma ze? (what is it in Hebrew) – which was followed by a reply – the picture itself with a writing in Hebrew on top of it – חתול – hatul. And soon it became their hobby, sending a picture and receiving it’s Hebrew meaning. They did it with everything you can and can’t take pictures of – from a car to market stands with vegetables to body parts and people kissing. It was amazing to see so many pictures there.
She went over the pictures every day, and it really worked – the personal connection she had with the pictures she took brought into his consciousness what she knew and didn’t know – at the beginning she used to open the picture directory to look for the words in Hebrew, and after a while they just sticked – and why not? For her partner it was a very cool and effective way to help out with the Hebrew studying, it didn’t require almost anything from him, and on top of that he finally knew what she was supposed to know because he was a part of her Hebrew learning process. Amazing isn’t it?

So in a few steps – how to do it right and not to create a complete mess:

Step 1: Start a Whatsapp/Telegram Group. Call it “Hebrew Picture Dictionary”. Add people who can help you out – partner, classmates, family and friends.
Step 2: Explain the rules – you are sending a picture and they are sending one back – the picture either edited with a writing on it – the word in Hebrew and how to say it or IN THE SAME MESSAGE THEY SEND the word and how to pronounce it (otherwise it won’t appear on top of the picture).
Step 3: Go over your Pictionary photos daily (it will be under Group Media)
Step 4: Thank all those people who helped you 🙂
Step 5: Use the new words you know, and remember – there are people who know that you know them now – tell them to use the words when they speak with you!

If you’re a group of students you can actually open a group for the entire class or for a bunch of students and just switch words in this group. It would be a fantastic experience for you at the beginning of the beginners stage of learning the language, and I love this idea particularly.
